All Silk Bedding Direct Luxury Range silk duvet inners are filled with hypoallergenic top grade long-strand 100% natural mulberry silk. Hand stretched into the duvet casing the silk is then loop sewn and tied by hand through the casing to prevent movement. Hand loop sewing is used to avoid crushing the precious silk inside and stop much needed insulating layers of air being expelled. It is a much superior method to machine "pattern" or "box" sewing and the result is a more comfortable, luxurious and higher quality silk duvet.

Most mulberry silk-filled duvets on the market today cannot be produced in this way because the quality of the silk used is not sufficiently high. In order for hand loop sewing to be possible only the best long-strand mulberry silk can be used. Of course it is also cheaper to machine sew so this is the method most other suppliers use.

Besides the superior quality of the mulberry silk itself, thermal insulating properties created by air being enclosed between the fine silk threads is one of the reasons that Silk Bedding Direct's mulberry silk-filled duvets are so light and comfortable, and so effective in regulating sleeping temperature.

This ensures that the silk cannot bunch up or move about within the casing and maintains an even warmth for the life of the duvet. Hand sewing is important to maintain the necessary volume of air within the silk. Machine sewing eliminates the air where it is sewn and also damages the silk by crushing it, thereby eliminating much of the silk duvet's natural insulating properties.

It is not possible to hand loop sew most mulberry silk duvets because the quality of the silk is not high enough – only the best long-strand mulberry silk can be used to produce luxury mulberry silk-filled duvets that are finished in this way.

12. Very little cleaning required - under normal circumstances cleaning your silk duvet inner will almost never be required. If necessary a mild detergent can be used to spot clean. Over a long period of time, if it becomes a little flatter from usage, simply air outside preferably on a sunny day. Even after years of usage this should return your luxury duvet inner to a nearly new condition.

It is very important to avoid machine washing as this will harm the duvet. Silk duvet inners that can be machine washed have been chemically treated to make this possible. What Exactly is a Silk-Filled Duvet?
Silk Bedding Direct's luxury long-strand mulberry silk-filled duvets consist of an inner part which provides the warmth (this is 100% pure top quality long-strand mulberry silk), and an outer casing that holds the duvet together (a luxurious and durable 300 thread count cotton sateen).

The terms “duvet” and “comforter” have similar meanings, however a duvet is always used with a duvet cover. We recommend a duvet cover made from a natural fiber such as cotton be used with our silk-filled duvet inners.

The silk interior is top quality 100% natural long-strand mulberry silk and nothing else. Mulberry silk means that the silkworms that make the silk cocoons have been fed on a diet of 100% mulberry leaves.

It is universally accepted that moths fed on mulberry leaves produce the very best silk possible, and can produce silk cocoons containing very long strands of silk (individual silk strands within our duvets can be up to half a mile long!). Top grade long-strand mulberry silk is very soft to the touch and besides being hypoallergenic has excellent insulation properties, ideal for making these wonderfully comfortable and soothing luxury silk duvets.

Please note that we NEVER use tussah silk - produced by wild moths that eat whatever they come across tussah silk is an inferior product which needs to be chemically treated before use thereby losing many of the great benefits of silk-filled duvets.

All our Luxury Range silk-filled duvets are complete with a high quality 300 thread count cotton sateen casing. Although it is possible to use silk for the outer casing this is not recommended as it can tear more easily than cotton sateen. This means it would shorten the life of the duvet while considerably adding to the cost. Using a silk inner / cotton sateen casing combination means you can enjoy the perfect night's sleep for many years to come. The goodness and beneficial properties of the long-strand mulberry silk easily seep through the cotton sateen casing.
